Results get posted as a PDF once someone’s had time to tally everything by hand. It works. It’s also usually one exhausted volunteer, one wrong formula, and one Sunday night away from falling over.

Where the informal version breaks down

  • Entries scattered across email and paper forms, reconciled by hand before an event even starts
  • A scoring spreadsheet only one person really understands, with formulas nobody wants to touch mid-competition
  • No live visibility — competitors and spectators wait for a result to be manually posted, rather than seeing standings update as scores come in
  • Historical results lost or scattered — last year’s results live in a different file to this year’s, if they’re findable at all
  • Handover risk — when the volunteer who built the spreadsheet moves on, so does the only working copy of how scoring actually works

Why I build these rather than hand someone a form builder

Off-the-shelf event tools are built for generic conferences and fun runs — registration and a name tag. They don’t understand scoring logic specific to your discipline, and they’re usually not worth the licence fee for a club running a handful of events a year. I build something sized to what your club actually does, that your committee owns outright, without an annual per-event fee eating into the entry money.
